A journey chock full of surprises Hush! Be still and pay attention, because in the woods you’ll see deer and roe deer, boars, badgers, martens and grey dormice. In the River Larraun you’ll spy trout, catfish, polecats, beech martens, minks and Pyrenean desmans, salamanders, newts, frogs... And in the branches of the tree, lying in wait, kingfishers, dippers... While up in the sky circle vultures, owls, buzzards, tawny owls, kites, crows, and many more.

This could be the starting point  for your journey.

The Tourist Office will tell you all about the possibilities offered by the Greenway, and about the different options for tourists: things to visit in the area, craftsmen, tours, lodging, restaurants, etc. In addition to our tourist office, we have a shop featuring handcrafted items, local products and branded products.    Upstairs, there’s an exhibition hall where you can enjoy an audiovisual presentation on tourism in PLAZAOLA and get to know the history of the train through a presentation.   Right there – just outside – is the play car for the little ones. In the old warehouse converted into a café – "LA KANTINA" – you can sit back and take a break while you talk about the day’s events. There’s also a bike hire and return transport service.

The play car is a train car that’s been turned into a space for exhibition and play, full of interesting stories, dreams and lots of history where children can play and even pretend to be train conductors. Though geared toward children, it’s a “must” for all visitors.

This narrow-gauge, steam-powdered railway began as a mining train that transported iron from Plazaola’s mines to Andoain (Gipuzkoa) at the turn of the last century.   In 1914, the Plazaola train was converted into a passenger train connecting San Sebastián and Pamplona, the two neighbouring capitals.  During its forty years of operation, it covered a trade and transport route between Navarre and Gipuzkoa and was also an important means of cultural exchange.  The floods of 1953 and strong competition of the coach lines caused the tracks to be dismantled in 1958, leaving a deep mark on the landscape.

1914-2014.Este año se cumplen 100 años de la inauguración del tren de PLAZAOLA.En el consorcio también cumplimos años. 20 años de dedicación al desarrollo turístico de la zona.Con ganas renovadas, para este año estamos preparando muchos eventos en los que os esperamos.

The very first PLAZAOLA train departed Pamplona on 19 January 1914.  The old mining train had been turned into a passenger train linking the cities of San Sebastián and Pamplona, resulting in a spectacular, winding railway line replete with tunnels and full of magic and history. It’s been 100 years since that first trip and 20 since the founding of the Consortium, created to promote the development of local tourism and bring back the train’s old route.  It's going to be very special year, and we’d like to share it with you in the various events that we’ll be holding throughout the year.

In Lekunberri Station, there’s a free bicycle service for mobility-challenged people. These bikes have been donated by Sanitas Group, in collaboration with the Spanish Railway Foundation and the También Foundation. Their gentle slopes and lack of traffic make the greenways an excellent route for enjoying and connecting with nature for everyone...and – most especially – for people living with mobility issues. Este ferrocarril de vía estrecha y tracción a vapor empezó siendo un tren minero que a principios de siglo transportaba hierro de las minas de Plazaola, hasta Andoain (Gipuzkoa).   En 1914 el Plazaola se transformó en tren de viajeros que comunicaba Pamplona y San Sebastián, las dos capitales vecinas.  Durante sus cuarenta años de funcionamiento fue una ruta comercial y de comunicación entre Navarra y Gipuzkoa así como eje de intercambio cultural.  Las riadas de 1953 y la dura competencia de las líneas de autobuses hicieron que en 1958 se desmantelaran las vías dejando una profunda huella en el paisaje.

El 19 de enero de 1914, partió de Pamplona el primer tren del PLAZAOLA.   El antiguo tren minero se había convertido en el tren de pasajeros que unía las ciudades de San Sebastián y Pamplona dando lugar a una linea sinuosa, repleta de túneles, preciosa, llena de magia e historia. Se cumplen 100 años, desde aquel primer viaje y 20, desde la fundación el Consorcio, nacido para fomentar el desarrollo turístico de la zona,  y recuperar el antiguo trazado del tren.  Un año muy especial, que queremos compartir con vosotros en los diversos actos que celebraremos a lo largo del año.
