Celebrations

With the exception of the more industrial towns or those dedicated to services, this is predominantly a farming region, and as such the fiestas are normally celebrated in a family atmosphere by the small group of inhabitants from each village.

Winter: at Christmas time the main protagonist of the festivities is “el Olentzero”, a friendly coalman who brings presents on 24th December. The procession of the Three Kings / Wise Men on the eve of the 6th January is also an important occasion.

Carnival is a big event: in Uitzi, "matatxerri" (the slaughter of a pig) and "puska biltza" (the collection of food and money) take place on the first or second weekend in January.

Spring: on Easter Sunday San Miguel de Aralar abandons his sanctuary and begins his round of visits to the villages where he blesses the land. This continues until the eve of San Juan, in June, by which time he has visited nearly three hundred villages in Navarre, starting with Baraibar and finishing in Uharte Arakil. “Corpus Christi” is celebrated at the sanctuary with a procession through the surrounding area.

Amongst the most famous romerías (pilgrimages to local shrines) are “la Trinidad de Irurtzun”, the procession from Alkotz to the monastery of Belate, the procession of “Santa Engracia de Uitzi” and the procession of “Santa Cruz” in Areso and Leitza.

In the summer months each locality celebrates the festival of its patron saint. The bigger towns and villages tend to attract a larger turnout from the surrounding areas. The fiestas in Leitza, in August, are famous for their displays of rural sports known as "herri kirolak", and also for the regional dance groups that perform the traditional "espatadantza" and the "ingurutxo" dances. The fiestas in Betelu, Lekunberri and Irurtzun are the only ones that have a group of giants, typical in the larger fiestas of the region.
